03/26/09

For Immediate Release
Thursday, March 26, 2009

St. Tammany Parish Fire Protection District No. 12 Chief Darrell Guillot and Chief of Training, Safety and Fire Prevention Stephen Krentel will attend the Congressional Fire Services Institute’s 21st Annual Seminars in the nation’s capital next week.

Among other offerings, seminars at the two-day event will include panels and lectures on topics such as “Firefighter Health and Safety,” “Hearing the Call for Enhanced Emergency Communications,” and “Funding our Nation’s Fire Services: the Federal Commitment.”

Chiefs Guillot and Krentel will also have opportunity to meet with Congressman Steve Scalise and Senators David Vitter and Mary Landrieu to discuss the federal commitment to local emergency responders.

The Congressional Fire Services Institute (CFSI) was founded in 1989 to educate members of Congress about the needs of and issues affecting local fire service professionals and volunteers. The organization provides annual educational programs for members of Congress, as well as its annual conference designed to strengthen the collective voice of firefighters and their leaders.

“We’re really looking forward to attending this conference,” said Guillot, who will be attending for the first time. “Opportunities such as this are important not only to improve our professional educations but to unite with a single voice on Capitol Hill.”

With 65 full-time staff and five fire stations, Fire District 12 serves residents and businesses in 63 square miles in western St. Tammany Parish, in addition to providing dispatch services for nine other fire districts in St. Tammany.
