FD12 Firefighters Trained In Planning And Management
08/03/09 For Immediate Release
Monday, Aug. 1, 2009
Every firefighter at St. Tammany Parish Fire Protection District 12 recently completed the course Introduction to Emergency Management, offered by the LSU Fire & Emergency Training Institute.
Although firefighters are trained to respond rapidly to emergency situations, the class focused on disaster-scale events and events affecting larger geographic areas and populations. Topics covered include Warning and Notification, Shift Management, Personnel Safety and Coordination with the Emergency Operations Center (EOC), among other sections.
All 40 full-time firefighters at the District underwent the training, which was offered on-site at FD12’s Covington-area facilities.
“The class emphasizes safety and coordination as the most important elements to a good plan and successful response,” said Fallon Lovill, the LSU-FETI Adjunct Instructor who taught the class. “Coordination includes inter-organizational planning and training. Safety includes utilizing an accountability system and following departmental response procedures.”
“Our working relationship with the LSU-FETI has been a tremendous benefit for our organization and for the citizens we serve,” said FD12 Chief Darrell Guilott. “Although disaster-scale emergencies arise rarely in our area, they do arise – as Hurricane Katrina showed us four years ago. We’re proud of our staff for having successfully completed this course, and we’re confident our constituents will be better served as a result of this effort.”
