FD12 Battles Early-Morning Fire Near Covington

05/20/09

For Immediate Release
Wednesday, May 20, 2009

More than a dozen firefighters from St. Tammany Fire Protection District No. 12 responded to a structure fire at 1:40 this morning on Monga Road, off Three Rivers Road south of Covington.

First units on the scene encountered difficulty with maneuverability of fire suppression equipment because of the road’s narrow width. The structure at 18152 Monga Road was fully engulfed in flames upon firefighters’ arrival, and the home is classified as a total loss.

No one was injured in the blaze, which brought 15 firefighters from FD12, in addition to deputies from the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office and Cleco. Firefighters used water from the adjacent canals to battle the flames, concentrating on preventing the fire from spreading to nearby structures since the home was clearly engulfed when firefighters arrived.

The house is the owner’s weekend home and was unoccupied at the time of the incident. A neighbor called 911 to report the fire.

The cause of the blaze is undetermined, but remains under investigation by the State Fire Marshal.
