FD12 And Surrounding Agencies Battling Restaurant Fire Near Covington
03/01/10 For Immediate Release
Monday, March 1, 2010
Firefighters from St. Tammany Fire Protection District 12 have been joined by equipment and personnel from seven other surrounding fire protection agencies to battle a major fire at a popular Northshore restaurant.
At 11:13, 911 operators received the first of approximately 35 calls about a fire at South China Restaurant, located at 2220 North Highway 190, south of Covington. Responding units arrived in less than three minutes and found the fire burning heavily in the building's attic. Venting the roof and attacking the blaze from the interior of the structure proved ineffective, and firefighters have now assumed defensive tactics, protecting nearby structures.
FD12 Deputy Chief Stephen Krentel said he expects the building will be a total loss. South China has been a popular restaurant in the area for more than two decades.
There are no reports of injuries, but traffic is backed up several miles on northbound Highway 190 towards Covington.
Because of limited water supply in the area, other fire districts have responded with tanker trucks and additional personnel. Under mutual aid agreements, St. Tammany's various fire districts provide one another with on-scene support and district coverage during such incidents, so no area of the parish is without fire protection service.
Additional details will be released by Chief Krentel on the scene or by email as they become available.
