A kitchen fire near Covington heavily damaged a home in the King's Forest subdivision Tuesday, but no one was injured and firefighters managed to save the family pets.
Unattended food left on the stove and in the oven caught fire at about 4:20 p.m. at 306 Robin Hood Dr. An alert 6-year-old spotted the smoke and alerted his parents. A neighbor called 911, and Fire District 12 personnel were on the scene in three minutes.
The house was heavily smoke-damaged, with fire damage confined primarily to the kitchen. Six units and 16 firefighters responded, and had the blaze under control in about 30 minutes. After ensuring all people were safe and the house was unoccupied, firefighters focused some attention on rescuing the family pets - three dogs, two hamsters and a fish.
"I'm very proud of our team," said FD12 Deputy Chief Stephen Krentel. "From our dispatchers to our suppression units, everyone worked to their maximum speed and capacity to minimize the damage from this fire."
Krentel also praised the child who first spotted the fire.
"We estimate that only a 2-minute delay would have resulted in much worse damage," Krentel said. "Although the interior was heavily damaged, the house remains structurally sound. That would not have been the case if that little boy hadn't alerted his parents to the fire."
