On May 7, 2010 Fire District 12 received a beam from the World Trade Center in New York as a donation from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. The beam, once a piece of the Twin Towers destroyed by terrorists on 9/11, was used as evidence in the trial of some of those responsible for the attack.
Now at FD12 headquarters near Covington, the beam will be incorporated into a permanent sculpture to be placed on the grounds of the facility at the intersection of Hwy. 36 and Hwy. 21.
FD12 is soliciting drawings and suggestions from local artists as to how the beam will be incorporated into the design, and local architects and engineers are donating their time to fulfill the installation. For more information about the sculpture project, please contact Deputy Chief Stephen Krentel at 985.892.5161. All St. Tammany residents or students who are permanent residents of St. Tammany and matriculating elsewhere are eligible to submit designs. The request is not limited to professional artists; anyone can submit a conceptual design to incorporate the beam.
